Virginia Tech said Oct. 16 that it received a five-year federal grant to continue its Talent Search program, which will serve 891 students annually in 11 school divisions across Southwest and Central Virginia. The award is $445,500 per year, according to the university.

The university said its advisers work in schools in Floyd, Franklin, Giles, Grayson, Henry, Montgomery and Pulaski counties, and in Galax, Lynchburg, Martinsville and Salem. Talent Search helps students explore careers, visit college campuses, apply for financial aid and consider options after high school, according to Virginia Tech.

Virginia Tech said services are free to participating students and include tutoring, study-skills support, SAT and ACT preparation, testing-fee waivers, and help with college and financial-aid applications. The renewed grant will also support expanded tutoring, workforce-readiness programming and exposure to apprenticeships, the university said.

The program is part of the federal TRIO Programs and serves students from income-eligible families, prospective first-generation college graduates, and students who need assistance, according to Virginia Tech. The university listed Rich Mathieson as the contact for the announcement, at 540-231-4691.
